About Eravikulam National Park
Eravikulam National Park: The Roof of Kerala
There are national parks where you go to see the jungle, and then there are parks where you go to touch the sky. Eravikulam is the latter. Situated high in the Kannan Devan Hills of the Southern Western Ghats, this 97-square-kilometer sanctuary is a rolling plateau of high-altitude grasslands known as Shola. It is an ecosystem so unique that it exists nowhere else on the planet.
For the American traveler, the landscape here might evoke memories of the Scottish Highlands or the alpine meadows of the Rockies, but with a tropical twist. The air is thin, the mist is constant, and the silence is profound. This is the home of the Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered mountain goat that has become the icon of conservation in South India.
The Main Attraction: The Nilgiri Tahr
Unlike tigers or leopards that require hours of patient tracking (and luck), the Nilgiri Tahr is surprisingly cooperative. They are often found grazing right next to the visitor paths in the Rajamala tourism zone.
- What are they? They are stocky mountain goats with curved horns and a gravity-defying ability to scale vertical cliffs.
- Status: They are endangered. Eravikulam holds the largest viable population of Tahr in the world. Seeing them here is a privilege.
- Photo Op: They are generally habituated to humans, allowing for incredible close-up photography. However, never attempt to touch or feed them.
The Kurinji Phenomenon (The Blue Bloom)
If you are lucky enough to visit during a "Neelakurinji" year, you will witness a miracle. The Strobilanthes kunthiana is a shrub that blooms only once every 12 years, turning the entire green valley into a carpet of violet-blue.
- Last Bloom: 2018.
- Next Bloom: Expected around 2030.
- Note: Even without the bloom, the rolling grasslands offer a stunning emerald vista that is worth the trip alone.
The Experience: It's Not a Drive-Through
Eravikulam is strictly regulated to protect its fragile ecosystem. You cannot drive your private car inside.
- The Base: You park your car at the designated parking area.
- The Shuttle: You board a Forest Department eco-bus. This 20-minute ride takes you up the winding hill roads, offering vertiginous views of the tea plantations below.
- The Walk: The bus drops you at the Rajamala checkpoint. From here, you walk. It is a paved path (about 1-2 km) that winds up the hill. This is where you spot the Tahr and soak in the views.
Anamudi: The South Indian Everest
Inside the park stands Anamudi Peak. At 2,695 meters (8,842 ft), it is the highest peak in India south of the Himalayas.
Can you climb it? No. Trekking to the summit is currently banned to protect the ecosystem. However, you get a magnificent view of the peak from the Rajamala tourism zone. It looms over the park like a guardian sentinel.
Practical "Know Before You Go" for US Travelers
1. Seasonal Closure (Very Important)
The park closes every year for the calving season of the Nilgiri Tahr.
When: Usually February to March (roughly 4-6 weeks).
The Fix: If you are planning a trip in early spring, check the official website specifically for closure dates before booking your flights.
2. Tickets & Queues
Eravikulam is popular. The queues for the bus can be long, especially on weekends and holidays.
Pro Tip: Book online in advance. The Forest Department releases a quota of online tickets. Having one allows you to skip the ticket-counter line (though you still wait for the bus).
3. What to Wear
You are at high altitude.
Temperature: It can drop to 40°F - 50°F (5°C - 10°C) even when the coast is sweltering.
Gear: Bring a light jacket or windbreaker. Comfortable walking shoes are a must.
4. Restrictions
This is a plastic-free zone. Security will check your bags.
Do not bring food inside (it attracts wildlife).
Do not bring pets.
Getting There
Eravikulam is located just 15km from Munnar town. It is a standard inclusion in any Munnar itinerary.
Drive Time: About 30-45 minutes from Munnar center, depending on traffic.
Eravikulam offers a perspective of India that few expect—cool, misty, and incredibly orderly. It is a place to breathe the cleanest air in the country and watch the clouds float below your feet.
