    About Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary: The Kingdom of the Elephant

If you have seen a postcard of Kerala tourism, you have likely seen Periyar: a misty lake, the ghostly stumps of submerged trees rising from the water, and a herd of wild elephants bathing on the banks. Located in Thekkady, this is arguably the most popular wildlife sanctuary in South India.

For the American traveler, Periyar is the perfect middle ground between comfort and wilderness. It is a Tiger Reserve, but the real stars here are the elephants. Unlike the dense, impenetrable canopy of Silent Valley, Periyar is centered around a massive artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam. This open water source means visibility is excellent. You don't have to hunt for the animals; they come to you.

The Iconic Experience: The Boat Safari

This is the standard way to see the park. You board a double-decker boat and cruise the lake for 90 minutes.
The Pros: It is safe, accessible for all ages, and offers a near-guarantee of seeing elephants, bison (Gaur), and wild boars at the water's edge.
The Cons: It can get crowded and noisy.
Pro Tip: Book the first boat (7:30 AM) or the last boat (3:30 PM). This is when animals are most active. Mid-day boats are often just a hot cruise with few sightings.

For the True Explorer: Bamboo Rafting

If the idea of a crowded motorboat turns you off, sign up for the Bamboo Rafting program.
This is a dawn-to-dusk adventure (usually 8 AM to 5 PM). You hike through the forest for a few hours and then paddle across the lake on a traditional bamboo raft.
Why do it? It is silent. You can hear the jungle breathe. You get much closer to the wildlife, accompanied by armed forest guards and tribal trackers. It is physically demanding but infinitely more rewarding than the standard boat ride.

The Spice Capital of the World

You cannot leave Thekkady without visiting a spice plantation. You are in the Cardamom Hills. The air here literally smells of cloves, cinnamon, and pepper.
The Tour: Take a guided walk through a plantation. You will see how pepper vines climb trees, how cardamom grows at the base of plants, and distinguish between Robusta and Arabica coffee. It is a sensory overload and a great place to buy gifts for folks back home.

Where to Stay: Inside or Outside?

Periyar offers a unique accommodation choice.

    • Inside the Park (KTDC Hotels): There are three government-run hotels inside the sanctuary boundaries (Aranya Nivas, Periyar House, Lake Palace).
The Advantage: You are already inside the park. You wake up to the sounds of the forest. You can often see monkeys and giant squirrels from your balcony.
    • Kumily (The Town): Just outside the park gate. It is packed with homestays, luxury resorts (like Spice Village), and restaurants. It offers more variety and luxury than the government hotels.

Practical "Know Before You Go" for US Travelers

    1. The Ticket Scramble

Getting a ticket for the boat safari can be chaotic if you show up in person.
The Fix: Book online. The Periyar Tiger Reserve website allows you to book boat seats and trekking slots in advance. Do this weeks before you fly.

    2. The Leech Socks

If you are doing the Bamboo Rafting or the Nature Walk, you will encounter leeches.
The Fix: The forest department usually provides "Leech Socks" (canvas gaiters) for trekkers. Wear them. Do not wear open-toed sandals for treks.

    3. Dress Code

Kerala is conservative, and the forest is wild.
Wear earth tones (green, brown, beige). Avoid bright reds or whites which can startle animals. Wear sturdy walking shoes.

    4. Monkey Business

The Bonnet Macaques near the boat landing are professional thieves.
Do not walk around with food in your hand. Keep your sunglasses and phones gripping tight. If they approach, do not smile (showing teeth is a sign of aggression); just ignore them and walk away.

    Nearby: Gavi Ecotourism

If you have an extra day, book a Jeep Safari to Gavi. It is about 40km away deep in the forest. It is one of the most pristine spots in India, known for its "Blue-winged Parakeet" and rare Lion-tailed Macaques. It feels like entering a lost world.

Periyar is where the wilderness welcomes you. It is easy to access, beautiful to behold, and offers just enough thrill to make you feel like an explorer.

For online boat booking and eco-tourism programs, strictly use the Official Periyar Tiger Reserve Website.
